Essar Energy full-year earnings beat expectations

(Reuters) - Essar Energy Plc reported better-than-expected full-year earnings as improving refining capacity at its core oil refineries -- Vadinar in India and Stanlow in Britain -- pushed up margins.

The London-listed power, oil and gas arm of privately owned Indian conglomerate Essar Group, said earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation, on a current price basis, was $1.34 billion (872.62 million pounds) in the year ended March 31, compared with a company-provided analysts' estimate of $1.17 billion.

The company this year moved its year-end to March from December, making the previous comparative period a 15 month one.

Full-year refining margins rose 88 percent to $7.96 per barrel of oil at the company's core Essar Oil business, which owns a network of 1,600 franchised gas stations across India.

Essar Energy's assets also include a 50 percent stake in Kenya Petroleum Refinery Ltd, and 2,034 mmboe of reserves and resources at its exploration and production blocks.

Essar Energy's shares, which have shed about 6 percent of their value over the past year, were trading up about 2 percent at 123 pence at 0704 GMT on Monday on the London Stock Exchange.

TOO HARSH: Britain's New £3000 Visa Policy?

Britain is planning to force visitors from Nigeria, India, Pakistan, and other countries whose nationals are deemed to pose a “high risk” of immigration abuse to provide a cash bond before they can enter the country, a report said Sunday. The Sunday Times newspaper said that from November, a pilot scheme would target visitors from those three countries plus Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Ghana.Visitors aged 18 and over would be forced to hand over £3,000 ($4,600, 3,500 euros) from November for a six-month visit visa. They will forfeit the money if they overstay in Britain after their visa has expired.Initially the scheme will target hundreds of visitors, but the plan is to extend it to several thousand, according to the broadsheet’s front-page report. The weekly paper said the move by Home Secretary Theresa May is designed to show that Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative Party is serious about cutting immigration and abuses of the system. The populist United Kingdom Independence Party has been encroaching on the Conservatives’ traditional core vote in recent months.Cameron wants annual net migration down below 100,000 by 2015.“This is the next step in making sure our immigration system is more selective, bringing down net migration from the hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands while still welcoming the brightest and the best to Britain,” May was quoted as saying.“In the long run we’re interested in a system of bonds that deters overstaying and recovers costs if a foreign national has used our public services.”A Home Office official said the six countries highlighted were those with “the most significant risk of abuse”.Last year 296,000 people granted six-month visas were from India, 101,000 from Nigeria, 53,000 from Pakistan and 14,000 each were from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.Source: PM NewsUPDATE: We Will Respond - FGThe Foreign Affairs Minister stated this in Abuja. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olugbenga Ashiru, said the Federal Government will not hesitate to defend the interest of Nigerians on consular related issues with foreign countries.Mr. Ashiru gave the assurance on Monday in Abuja following a proposal by the U.K. to introduce a bond of 3,000 pounds (N750, 000) for intending visitors from Nigeria and five other countries. Visa applicants are expected to pay the bond, which will be returned to them if they do not overstay their visa approvals.Responding to a question at the 2013 Ministerial Platform, Mr. Ashiru said that the U.K. government was yet to officially notify Nigeria on the proposal, scheduled to start in November.“Really, we have received no official communication from the U.K. government,” he said.“When we receive communication from them, we will study whatever proposal they are trying to do but I can assure all Nigerians that President Jonathan’s government will defend the interest of Nigerians by whatever means it can.’’The minister admitted that the biggest challenge facing the present administration’s foreign policy thrust was the welfare of Nigerians abroad. He said Nigerian missions abroad had been directed to pay utmost attention to the needs of Nigerians abroad, particularly the plight of Nigerians in various prisons abroad.Mr. Ashiru acknowledged that many Nigerians were stranded abroad in prisons and that the affected Nigerians had continued to suffer various forms of discriminations in their host countries. He said over 9000 Nigerians are currently serving prisons terms abroad, with the largest number of 752 in the UK.“Most of the remaining prisoners are concentrated in the Asia – Pacific region and a good number of them are on death row.“We are concluding Prisoners’ Transfer Agreement (PTA) with all those countries, such as United Kingdom, Thailand, Japan, China, Indonesia, Switzerland, South Africa, Mozambique, Angola and Hong Kong, so that we can bring home these Nigerians to complete their prison terms.“I wish to seize this opportunity to appeal to members of different groups; the media, civil societies, religious groups, traditional rulers, etc, to join hands in the education of our youths in an enlightenment campaign against trafficking in drugs, in particular, and other social vices in general.“This assignment should not be left alone to Governments at different levels to handle.’’On the much-talked about reopening of Information Centres abroad, the minister appealed to the Federal Ministry of Information to ensure proper funding for the centres.“All I will appeal is that when it starts, they must be well funded; I do not want cases where you send information officers abroad and after nine months or six months the funding will be tied.“You must ensure proper funding and we in the ministry of foreign affairs are in favour of this move because three or four heads are better than one. We believe that the more experts we have to help with image promotion, the better for us.’’Source: NAN

St. John the Baptist and the Knights of Malta

In the my novel The Night's Dark Shade there is a scene describing a 13th century St. John's Eve celebration in a bastide built by the Knights of St. John in the south of France. St. John the Baptist is still the patron of the modern Knights, known today as the Knights of Malta. Here is a homily by Fr. Mark Kirby to some Knights in Ireland:Holiness cannot be stereotyped. Holiness comes in a splendid variety of forms, and colours. There is no age, no state in life, no occupation, no background, no place, nor race, nor culture that is, of itself, foreign to holiness. We, therefore have no excuse. God would have each us become a saint. To resist the call to holiness is to resist the will of God. "This is the will of God," says the Apostle, "your sanctification" (1 Thessalonians 4:3).In the Order of MaltaThe particular form of holiness to which you are called will be shaped, then, and coloured by your membership in the Order of Malta. What exactly does this mean? What might your holiness look like? Your charism -- that is to say, the special identifying grace that makes your Order what it is in the Church -- has been summed up in two Latin terms: Tuitio Fidei and Obsequium Pauperum, which I should like to render respectively as The Faith, Contemplated and Upheld, and The Poor, Served with All Devotedness. The second of these, The Poor, Served with All Devotedness, is motivated by and sustained by the first, The Faith, Contemplated and Upheld. For this reason, today, and in the context of the Year of Faith, I should like, for a moment, to consider the first of these terms: Tuitio Fidei.Look, See, ContemplateThe Latin word tuitio is rooted in the verb tuere meaning, first of all, to look at; to see; to fix one's gaze upon; or, if you will, to contemplate. Our English word intuition -- a knowledge gained by looking deeply into something -- is derived from the same verb. Your first duty, then -- and what a sweet and life-giving duty it is -- is to gaze upon Christ in the mysteries of the faith; to look, not only at them, but into them; and then to be so changed by your contemplation, that you translate it, necessarily, into the devoted service of Christ in His poor. How does one fix one's gaze upon the mysteries of the faith? Where does one find Christ in His mysteries so as to look upon Him? "We", you are undoubtedly thinking, "are not monks". We are people engaged in the frenzy and fury of a society increasingly hostile to the Gospel of Jesus Christ; to the mission of His Church, one holy, Catholic, and apostolic; and to the expression of the faith in public life. All the more reason, dear brothers and sisters, to commit yourselves to the Tuitio Fidei upon which your vocation to holiness in the Order of Malta is founded, and by which it is quickened and sustained. The Sacred Liturgy, Wellspring and SummitThe Tuitio Fidei (The Faith, Contemplated and Upheld ) begins and flourishes in the sacred liturgy; it bears abundant fruit in the Obsequium Pauperum (The Poor, Served with All Devotedness), and returns to the sacred liturgy. This is, simply put, the teaching of the Second Vatican Council, which called the sacred liturgy the wellspring and the summit of the life and action of the Church (cf. Sacrosanctum Concilium, art. 10). Your vocation to holiness, your summons to real sainthood as members of the Order of Malta, will be proportionate to your contemplation of Christ in His mysteries, and this by means of your actual participation in the sacred liturgy of the Church. Already in 1903 -- one-hundred-ten years ago -- Pope Saint Pius X called "active participation in the most holy mysteries" that is, in the liturgy, "the foremost and indispensable font of the true Christian spirit" (Motu Proprio, Tra le sollecitidini).Today's Holy Mass is but one opportunity to do precisely this. It is an occasion of grace freely given you by God and by the Church to be quickened in your unique vocation as -- yes -- saints of the Order of the Malta. "I claimed thee for my own before ever I fashioned thee in thy mother's womb; before ever thou camest to birth, I set thee apart for myself" (Jeremias 1:5).Under the Hand of GodWe heard, concerning John the Baptist, in the Holy Gospel: "And indeed the hand of the Lord was with him. The child grew up and his spirit matured. And he lived out in the wilderness until the day he appeared openly to Israel" (Luke 1: 66, 80).Submit to the hand of the Lord today, by placing yourselves humbly and willingly under the immense, and tender, and powerful liturgy of His Church. Open your eyes, your ears, and all your senses to every word uttered, to every note sung, to every gesture, and movement, and to the sacred silence which envelops this Mass and allows for the penetration of its particular grace into the most secret place of your souls. Landscaping and Crafting!

I LOVE summer.  I love nice weather, being outside, and of course expanding my crafting beyond the four walls of my house. In case you haven't noticed, I've shut down my Etsy shop indefinitely.  I was sad to shut it down in a way - it was really successful and I had a number of people want boards after I shut down.  BUT, I was so completely overwhelmed.  I work full time and am a newlywed, so something's gotta give.  Plus, I was honestly getting a little burned out with birthday boards...although it was really fun to think about my handcrafted items making their way around the world!  I'm still crafting away and making things for local craft fairs (come see me in Prairie Village on July 4th again this year!), but now I can make things at my own pace and fill up my free time with other fun projects.Speaking of other fun projects...we've been super busy at our house.  About a month ago I decided our backyard was pretty boring so we've decided to spruce things up.We started with our deck.  It's a simple deck with a roof...and before we had nothing but a small table and chairs set.  And now...my little oasis :)The chair, ottoman, loveseat, and area rug are all from Home Depot and really those were the only new purchases.  That wicker trunk was a gift from my sister when I graduated high school (so yes, it's over a decade old).  The two glass pillar candle holders were from Pier One last year. Here are a few of my favorite things from the deck...When pigs can fly bell.  Hobby Lobby.  Half Price.  So about $7.  SOLD!A happy little gnome.  Once again Hobby Lobby, half price. This little cart is a hand me down from my parents and a great place to keep pots of flowers and lavender.  Oh, and that little bird cage...it was the card holder at our wedding.  I just took the sign off of it and threw a pot in it.After the deck, I decided to tackle a vegetable garden.I did this all by myself.  In 3 hours.  (pause for applause).  No, seriously though...that was probably a bad idea.  I ended up getting pretty sick afterward and thought it was just allergies but then it turned into a sinus infection.  Moral of the story, no need to rock star it and do it all by yourself in one afternoon. These raised beds were a kit from Home Depot (yes, we practically live at Home Depot).  I started by staking out a good spot in my yard - plenty of sunshine and easy to mow around.  Then I put together my beds which only took about 20 minutes.  The kit is pretty awesome.  I laid cardboard down on the bottom to stop any weeds/grass from growing up into my beds.  Then filled with 30, yes 30, bags of soil.  Mostly top soil with a few bags of garden soil mixed in on top.  The lower bed houses herbs while the higher bed holds tomatoes, cucumbers, and strawberries.  The best part about these kits - you can always buy another set and build on because they all interlock together.  Perhaps next year...Here's a close up of my herbs.  I made my own garden markers using some scrap wood.  I just cut the wood at an angle so I could stake it into the ground.  Then I painted them all with some leftover craft paint, wrote the herb name using white paint pen, then sealed them in with multiple coats of clear coat spray paint.  It was a quick project using materials laying around the house. Then this weekend I ran up to Home Depot to grab a few plants for our front yard and accidentally bought a bunch of flowers.  Sooo...time for a flower garden! So this spot in our yard was honestly just some grass that wasn't in great shape after recent sprinkler repair.  We started by using a garden hose to mark out where we wanted our bed to be.  Mr. JG sprayed the spot with paint so we'd know were to dig.  Then, we dug it up.  We left a trench around the edge and put in some plastic edging, hammering into place with some spikes.  Once we had our bed made, we arranged our plants in the bed.  Mr. JG had to dig up holes for all of them (his back still hurts...he's pretty awesome to do this for me).  Once the holes were dug, we laid down weed barrier fabric and cut out spots where the plants will go.  Then we planted them.  Our soil is pretty much clay, so I added some garden soil around the plants when I planted them with the hope it will give them a little better shot at surviving.  Then, 5 bags of brown mulch covered the top and boom, instant flower garden.I have no idea how these flowers will do - but they all said they needed a nice sunny spot, so here's hoping!  Just in case you're curious, from left to right, the flowers are Camelot Lavender Foxglove, coral drift roses, speedwell royal candles, clematis (in the back with the trellis), orchid primrose, coral bells, more roses, and more royal candles. And, what's a garden without a little crafting...I made these teacup bird baths using some garage sale teacups and saucers, copper tubing, and a cap for the copper tube.  Glue the cup to the saucer using a strong adhesive (I used a gorilla glue) then attach the bottom of the saucer to a copper cap using adhesive.  I had to use epoxy for this because my gorilla glue wouldn't hold it.  You can get copper tubing from Home Depot or any hardware store - then cut it into sections (mine were 4' long) using a hacksaw.  Hammer your tubing down into the ground then stick your cap with attached cup onto the tubing.  The cup can be filled with water and become a little birdbath and the saucer holds seeds.  You're welcome birds, you're welcome. Finally, we added a few hanging plants to our back deck...And now...I think it's time for a backyard party!  Who's in?
