So here we have the sequel to 2009’s G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra, which grossed $300m worldwide. This is another film, like Jack the Giant Slayer that was pulled from a summer 2012 release, this time to provide a post-production 3D conversion. Jon M. Chu replacing Stephen Sommers while adding Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis to the ranks. Will it erase the memory of the dumb and not that fun first film or will big Dwayne and Bruce revitalise this toy tie in?
We are instantly introduced to some old and new characters such as Duke, Roadblock, Flint and Jaye in a first scene that has them breaking somebody out of North Korea. Next up for the Joe’s is to take back some nukes that are in the wrong hands. So Channing Tatum’s Duke and Dwayne Johnson’s Roadblock lead the successful attack and rendezvous in the desert where they are picked off like sitting ducks by a surprise attack leaving Duke dead and just 3 Joe’s left. It turns out that the president is behind this but he isn't who he seems, having been replaced by master of disguises Zartan. Meanwhile Storm Shadow, Byung-Hung Lee, sets about breaking out the Cobra Commander from a high security prison in an explosive scene. The remaining Joe’s look to recruit the original Joe, Bruce Willis in auto sneer and gun toting mode as they look to avenge the deaths of their team and to thwart the Cobra Commanders world domination plans. The action scenes are pretty well handled, with a stand out confrontation between Storm Shadow, Snake Eyes and a whole bunch of ninja’s. This also utilises the 3D conversion pretty well, whereas most of the 3D isn't that great to be fair considering the delay in the release for it. It’s a strange movie this, as most of the scenes except for the action ones are very short. This is obviously done for kids that have a very short attention span and can’t concentrate for more than 2 minutes at a time! This results in the movie feeling really long and disjointed. For what is essentially a kid’s movie a hell of a lot of people gets killed and it’s pretty violent. The plot feels like an old school Bond movie with world domination on the cards and the acting is what you would expect. Overall it does what it says on the tin and will keep many a kid happy for a couple of hours. I for one found it slightly tedious and samey, but if you like your action big and your acting cheesy you may just enjoy it.Score- 4/10
